Palm Sunday

cycle B

Theme:

The love of Jesus for us goes to the extreme.

Put the following drawing on the notice board

Dear children, Palm Sunday is compared to the door that Jesus had to enter. Jesus had to face all the sufferings and death on the cross. Before He died, Jesus promised us His body as food for the eternal life and love is shown by helping and sharing with those around us.  Today we are going to follow the teaching of Jesus.

-Have you ask Jesus to help us to be His followers in a true way?

-Have you helped at home in the work that you least like?

Dear Jesus, we call the last week that you spent on earth HOLY WEEK because in that week you suffered to save us from our sins. We don’t know how to thank you , but if we follow your example by loving and helping others we are saying thank you. Help us to understand your ways of love, your words of forgiveness and the giving of yourself so that the world would be a better one. We also ask you to help all the children who are missionary so that they live this holy week close to you. Amen.

Activity: Before hand, the catechist should prepare the following drawing. All the children in the meeting should help to color the drawing.

The Triumphal Entry

1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.' "

4They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5some people standing there asked, "What are you doing, untying that colt?" 6They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
   "Hosanna![

"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"[

10"Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!"
   "Hosanna in the highest!"

-Why do we call this Sunday when Jesus entered Jerusalem Palm Sunday’

-How did Jesus react to the people who praised Him?

-What did Jesus teach us on Palm Sunday and the rest of Holy week?

The Gospel tells us how was Jesus’ entrance to Jerusalem for his last Easter with his friends. Jesus was acclaimed by people but still he remains humble and silent. After that Sunday, what does Jesus do? What does he do the following days? Jesus teach his disciples and he is with them. On Thursday they will have dinner and Jesus will leave his will: “Love one each other as I have loved you”. There is no greater love than this one: The one that gives life for the friends. His will is not just words; he stood up and took off his cloak and tied a towel to his waist, then he knelt and washed his disciples feet. If Jesus that is God did this that supposed to be done by slaves, what do we have to do? The disciples didn’t accept easily Jesus’ gesture, Peter replied and Jesus said: I’ve given you the example for you to do the same thing. (Catechist will invite the children to be quiet for a moment and think about Jesus’ words).

Children will be placed in front of the board. They will contemplate the painting they all have done. The catechist will ask these questions:

  1. If I was one of the disciples whose Jesus is washing his feet, what would I tell him?
  2. If I have to wash my partners’ feet, a way of doing it would be say that I’m sorry for the wrong I’ve done.
  3. They can do so if someone wants to say sorry to one the partners.

The celebration can end with a chant that has to do with the new commandment.

  • 10- Commitment.

-I will tell my parents that I’m sorry for the wrong I’ve done.

-I’ll pray for those that does wrong to other people, so they regret and believe in Jesus.
