4º Sunday of EASTER

cycle B

Theme:

Jesus is the good shepherd who gave his life for his sheep.

That the children understand that the good shepherd, Jesus, loves his sheep and he does not abandon them even if he has to give his life for his sheep.

Put the following drawing on the notice board.

Dear children, Jesus comes to us today as a good shepherd who takes care, feeds, helps and is always with his sheep. We, if we want to be faithful to Jesus, we could be like the sheep in the flock of  Jesus.

-Did you tell your parents about what you learned in the last meeting?
-Did you say the Our Father every night asking God the Father to free us from those
things that are dangers to our christian life?

4- Prayer

Dear Jesus, good shepherd, you who are God and our friend, we love you, we adore you, we give you thanks because in many ways you invite us to your friendship and you are always with us. You know that many times we are weak, our faith is not strong. But because we know that you are there, we have trust in you and we know that you will help us to go on. amen.

Each child should receive a sheet of paper with a sentence from the gospel reading of today. There should be different sentences for every one. The children should do a drawing on the sentence that is on the sheet of paper. During the gospel reading, each child should have the drawing and be attentive when he or she hears the sentence to hold it up.

John 10,11-18.

11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

-What did Jesus say about himself?

-What difference does Jesus make between the owner of the sheep and the one who is paid to take care of the sheep?

-Why does Jesus say that the sheep know their shepherd?

-Why does Jesus say that he has other sheep who are not in the flock and should be brought there?

Jesus told the pharisees “ I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lay down his life for his sheep”. The pharisees who were incharge of the people, instead of leading them as the good shepherd does, they had the people under the burden of the law. The pharisees were very far from giving their lives for the people because they did not love anyone, only themselves. They were like people hired by God and because of this they received their pay. When Jesus says that He is  the son of  God the pharisees were upset because the son is not a hired man, he receives every thing from his father. Jesus said that He is the good shepherd and that he gives his life for his sheep. And that he has given his life for his sheep freely, only because he loves his sheep. The sheep that know Jesus, loves him and feel s secure with him. Jesus tells us that the person who is not a good shepherd, when he sees the wolf coming, he will abandon his sheep and leaves them for the wolf to scatter them  and snatch them. We have to renew our faith in Jesus, he has given his life for us because he is the good shepherd. We also know that there are many who say they are good shepherd but they are not like Jesus, they scatter, separate and destroy the flock.

Before hand the catechist prepares blank cards so that the children can write their names. At this moment, the children would stick their cards near to the sheep around Jesus the good shepherd on the notice board. Then everyone says the Our Father and sing a song .( the song should be chosen before hand and should be about the good shepherd)

  • 10- Commitment.

-Every night pray for those who are in danger of leaving the flock of Jesus because of false shepherds.

-Speak to friends about the importance of being in the flock of Jesus, the good shepherd because he is the only one who would give his life for us.
