3º Sunday of Advent - cycle B - |
|
Theme:
We can be witness of the Light just like John the Baptist was
- Objetive :
To help children to reaffirm their missionary vocation reflecting on the person and the mission of John the Baptist who was a witness of the Light.
- 1-Environment:
Put the following drawings on the notice board. Put the Advent wreath on the table in the center of the room.
2- Greeting:
Dear children, we already know a little about John the Baptist and his mission as precursor of Jesus. We are also witnesses of Jesus who we proclaim with our words and deeds.
3- Renewal of commitment.
-Did you receive the sacrament of reconciliation?
-Have you prayed for the countries at war?
-Have you reminded the members of your family about their commitment?
-Have you saved a little more money to give to the poor at Christmas time?
4- Prayer.
Dear Jesus, we are getting closer to the celebration of Christmas. We are happy because at this time of year we get together as a family, we participate in the masses at Christmas time with our family and friends, we sing Christmas carols, in our homes we put up a crèche with the figures of baby Jesus, the Virgin Mary, St Joseph, angels, shepherds with their sheep, animals and the star. We are happy to exchange gifts and visit our friends and relatives. We are grateful to you because you are the reason of this great celebration. Thank you Jesus.
5- Activity
The catechist should prepare the material before hand: a page with the following drawings, a cardboard the same size as the page with drawings, scissors, glue, colored pencils and other things that might be useful for the making of a crèche. Each child should color the figures and cut them out, decorating them as they like.
6- Gospel
Gospel according to St John 1,6-8 and 19-28.
6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
John the Baptist Denies Being the Christ
19Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ.[a]"
21They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?"
He said, "I am not."
"Are you the Prophet?"
He answered, "No."22Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "[b]
24Now some Pharisees who had been sent 25questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
26"I baptize with[c] water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. 27He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
28This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
7- Reflexion
-Who sent John the Baptist?
-Why did the high priests ask John the Baptist who he was?
-What did John the Baptist say about himself?
-Who did John the Baptist refer to when he spoke about the one who was among them?
8- Enlightenment
We have already spoken about John the Baptist. The gospel of John which we just read, tells us about the mission of John the Baptist. He was sent by God. He came as a witness of the Light.. so that everyone will believe through him. He was not the Light , he was the witness of the Light. All of this means that Jesus is the Light and without Jesus we are in darkness. People who do not have Jesus in their lives, are walking in darkness because Jesus is the Light. Just as John the Baptist was a witness of the Light, we too are witnesses because we were baptized by the Holy Spirit. Our mission is not only of words, we must have Jesus in our lives so as to carry him to other people. Making a crèche in our home is being a witness of Jesus. During Christmas time, many people talk about things that have nothing to do with the real meaning of Christmas such as the spirit of Christmas. We have to be watchful, careful, awake so that we do not fall into these false celebrations.
9- Celebration
All the children should sit around the table in a circle. Each child should have his or her crèche. The catechist should light the first two candles of the Advent wreath and also the third candle of the wreath. The catechist should invite the children to express their gratefulness to Jesus for coming and lighting up our lives taking us out of the darkness. Then the children can sing a Christmas carol about the coming of Jesus.
