Put these drawings in the notice board. Put the advent wreath on a small table in the center of the room. Later on during the meeting the second candle will be lighted.

Dear children, Because God loves us very much, He gives us everything. We don’t always understand his love because He respects our freedom and our decisions and because of this, He is willing to listen to us. He sent John the Baptist to prepare the way to Jesus. John the Baptist tells us that we should prepare the way to Jesus reflecting on our lives and making the changes necessary.

-Have you spoken to your family about being watchful?

-Have your family made a commitment?

-What have you all decided to do?

-Have you prayed for the people around you?

-Have you saved money to give to the needy for Christmas?

Dear God the Father, thank you for sending John the Baptist. Like him, we want to be messengers  of Jesus to be able to work in the spreading of  the kingdom of God. We want to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus so that He will be happy to be with us. We know that you listen to us and will help us Amen.

Before hand the catechist will use the following words to make a gamefor the children, WATCHFULNESS, ADVENT, WAY, JOHN THE BAPTIST, JESUS, HELP, LOVE, JOY, FORGIVENESS, TO SHARE, SACRIFICE, FAITH, CHRISTMAS, TO PREPARE, TO STRAIGHTEN.

A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Mark chapter 1, 1-8.

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah,

‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way;
3the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight,”
4John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’

-Where did John the Baptist come from and how was he dressed?

-Why did the people go to the place where he was and what was the name of that place?

-What did John the Baptist say about the person who would come after him and who was that person?

We all know that the person who comes before another saying what that person is going to do is called a precursor. John the Baptist is the precursor of Jesus and he invited people to prepare the way to Jesus through a true conversion, in other words, change of hearts, of habits, of thoughts and the style of life far from God. Many people went to John the Baptist to hear what he had to say and received Baptism as a sign of repentance. John explained that he was not the Messiah, the one who everyone waited for, instead he was the voice that shouted in the desert and asked people to repent. John said that the one who would come after him, was greater than him, that he would baptize with the Holy Spirit, that he, John was not worthy of untying his sandals. John was a simple humble man who knew what he had to do. He was a man who worked for the kingdom of God and that is why he lived in a simple way. He was only interested in carrying out  the mission given to him by God.

Everyone stands around the table where the Advent wreath is placed. The first and the second candles are lighted. The catechist explains: to respond to John’s invitation to change our lives, we need to examine our lives so as to take out the things which hinder the way for us to go to Jesus. Surely sometimes we envy other people, we don’t always say the truth, we disobey our parents, we offend others, we are selfish, among other things. ( the catechist can add other things) Because of all these things, we should ask God our Father to forgive us. At the end  we all say the Our Father.

  • 10- Commitment.

-Those who have made their first holy communion can receive the sacrament of reconciliation and so receive God’s forgiveness.
