6- Gospel Mark 7, 1-8. 14-15. 21-23.
Clean and Unclean
1The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and 2saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were "unclean," that is, unwashed. 3(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a]) 5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with 'unclean' hands?" 6He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'[b] 8You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men." 14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.' "[f] 21For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.' "
7- Reflexion
-What did the jews say to Jesus when his disciples didn’t wash their hands before eating?
-What was Jesus’ answer?
-What do the words of Issiah “ in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men” mean?
-What did Jesus say about what defiles a person?
8- Enlightenment
Today in the gospel, Jesus has spoken very clearly. If we do not have clean hearts, what we do is of no value. What happened with the jews in the time of Jesus? They went to the extreme keeping the rules but their hearts were far away from God. It is necessary to wash our hands , clean our mouths and take showers because of our personal health but that has nothing to do with our hearts. Jesus remembered the words of the prophet Issiah when he said that the people worship God with thrie lips but not with their hearts. For us today who live the word of God, we are told that God lives in us and because of this what ever we do must be because of this love of God and for the good of those around us. Those who love God are the ones who always say the truth, who help their neighbors, who pray and work to be able to know and believe more in Jesus, who despite the difficulties remain faithful to Jesus.
9- Celebration
The catechist invites the children to stand up in a circle in the middle of the room. The children will then say what they learned from the message of Jesus then they will ask themselves :
-What do they do so that others can see them?
-What things do they do so that only God the Father can see?
-The meeting ends with the Our Father and a prayerof thanks ot God.
