To keep vigil is to be aware of what is happening around us.
- Objetive :
That the children understand that God visits us and that we should be watchful
and be ready to receive Him.
- 1-Environment:
Environment: Prepare the notice board for the 4 weeks of Advent, making sure that there is room to put everything for the 4 weeks of Advent.
Put a table in the center of the room with a wreath made of pine branches. ( any other tree branches can be used if there aren’t pine branches to be found.
This wreath should have 4 candles which represent the weeks of Advent.
During the celebration of this first week the first candle should be lighted.
2- Greeting:
Dear children, God wants us to be happy with clean and peaceful hearts. He uses this time of Advent to call us to Him. Jesus, who is our savior, comes to us. We should be watchful and welcome Him in the best way possible.
3- Renewal of commitment
-Which part of the Gospel did you put in your room?
-Did you pray for the Christians who do not help those in need?
-Did you help someone in need?
4- Prayer.
DEAR JESUS, we know that you have already came to save us from our sins and to give us life everlasting and that this is so great that we are not capable of understanding it completely. In our church every year we celebrate your coming. We ask you to help us to be watchful so that we will be prepared to receive you. We ask you to help all the children to know you better so that they will be able to celebrate Christmas in the true way.
5- Activity
Draw the following in paper or cardboard, color it, cut it out and put it together.
6- Gospel
Let us listen to the Gospel of Saint Mark 13, 33-37:
“33 Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch. 35 Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. 36 May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to all: 'Watch!'"
7- Reflexion
-Why does Jesus tell us to be watchful?
-Who is the owner of the house who can come at any time?
-What do we have to do to be prepared when Jesus comes?
8- Enlightenment
We, in the today’s activity made a fortress and a guard. The guards of a fortress must be watchful and warn others when there is danger. Jesus tells us that we must be like the guards of a fortress. As we get older, our watchfulness must grow. Each year that we live is a gift from GOD. We are so busy preparing the celebrations of Christmas and New Years in a material way that they are not watchful for the real coming of Jesus. Being watchful helps us to see how the people around us live; many are hungry, many children and old people are abandoned with no one to help them, there are wars, violence in the street, children and women are badly treated, injustice, drugs and many other vices. The missionary children can pray for all these people so that they may receive help and more important, that these people may know and love God.
9- Celebration
Every one should stand around the table where the Advent wreath was placed.
( before hand an Advent hymn will be chosen) At this moment everyone will sing the hymn.
