Theme:

Do we have faith?

That children understand that we are give witness to our faith when we have difficulties.

Place on the notice board on a dark background the word  FAITH.

Dear children: Jesus our teacher, teaches us to persevere in the faith, which means, to believe in spite of difficult situations, fear and the threats that may come from outside.

-Have I invited someone or some persons, from my own family to pray every night for those who have not received the message of the Gospel?

-Have I deprived myself of something I would like to have to give my help to the missions?

Dear Jesus: You promised us that you will always be with us and that’s why you sent us the Holy Spirit. Many times we feel afraid, we are assaulted by doubts and we don’t trust in your words. We ask you to strengthen our faith and that we always trust in your love.  Amen.

The catechist invites the children to play the game of THE STORM. Everyone in a circle will act his or her part according to the order they are directed. When the words THE WIND BLOW are said everyone will move their arms and make wind noises: Uhhh! When STRONG WAVES are said everyone will stop and say: Ahhh!  When SHIPWRECK is said, everyone will go the center, hug each other and say: Ehhh! On saying STORM, everyone will change places while they say: Ohhh!

The catechist will give each child half a sheet of paper in which there will be drawn a lit candle with its flame. The children will paint it and very carefully cut out the candle without a pair of scissors and hand it to the catechist.

Mark 4, 35-41

With the coming of evening that same day, he said to them, ‘Let us cross over to the other side’. And leaving the crowd behind they took him, just as he was, in the boat; and there were other boats with him. Then it began to blow a gale and the waves were breaking into the boat so that it was almost swamped. But he was in the stern, his head on the cushion, asleep. They woke him and said to him, ‘Master, do you not care? We are going down!’ And he woke up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Quiet now! Be calm!’ And the wind dropped, and all was calm again. Then he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened? How is it that you have no faith?’ They were filled with awe and said to one another, ‘Who can this be? Even the wind and the sea obey him.’

  • 7- Reflexion

  • -What did the disciples say to Jesus when the storm broke?

-What did Jesus do when he awoke from sleep?

-What did Jesus mean to say with the words “How is it that you have no faith?”

Let us ask ourselves: Do we have faith? We know that Jesus is always with us but when a difficulty arrives, a scary or dreadful situation, we forget that Jesus is present and we behave as though we don’t believe.  What happened to the disciples when they traveled in the boat continues to happen to us. How is Jesus going to help us if in moments of darkness and fear we don’t call on him nor trust in him? Let’s think how Jesus will feel with that lack of trust that we have many times. It’s easy to say that we believe and trust in God when things go well, when the environment is joyful and we get along well with each other. The missionaries, the Christians that are persecuted and others who live in difficult situations in which to live the Christian faith give us a great example today and we have to pray for them. Our faith is strengthened by prayer, reading the Word of God, being faithful to Jesus even if others make fun of us. We have the security in the words of Jesus who promised to be with us always.

The catechist gives to each child one of the little candles they painted. Next, he will invite them to think about the answer to the following question:

How many times have I been afraid because I have not remembered the words of Jesus?

-And he then asks them to write below the “little flame”:

Jesus, forgive my lack of faith when . . .

Then they will place their “little flames” on the notice board around the word FAITH. Everything comes to an end with the following hymn or other similar: I believe Lord, but increase my faith. I believe Lord, but increase my faith.

    • 10- Commitment.

-I will write a prayer to Jesus for those who don’t believe and I will recite it every night.

-I will collect among my things those that I would like to share with some needy child and I will give it to the catechist at the next meeting.
