PALM SUNDAY

ON THE ROAD TO EASTER

Objective:

Understand that to get to Easter, in the glory of the Father, we have to travel the road, not of honors and acclamations, but of difficulties, like Jesus did.

Prepare a notice board with the following expression:

WITH JESUS, WE ARE ON OUR WAY TO EASTER.

  • 2) Greeting:

Dear children: we are near to the most important feast of  christians. We start  with Palm Sunday, continue  with the passion and death of Jesus until we get to Easter: the Great Feast of the Resurrection of the Lord!

  • 3) Review of the commitment:

- Have we finished coloring our cross of “defeat temptations”?

- Have we prayed for those who harm others?

  • 4) Activity

Give a piece of cardboard to each one of the children, on which a palm is drawn,  they have to paint it and cut it out.  While they’re painting , a song will be prepared. (this  song, should be chosen before hand)

  • 5)    THE WORD OF GOD

Gospel Reading: The catechist will read the gospel slowly, standing  in an appropriate place. Before hand  a boy is chosen to play the part of Jesus. He will enter  the room  at the moment that the reading indicates . With their palms, the children will greet Jesus and at the end of the reading they’ll sing the song that has been practiced.

Matthew 21, 1-11

“And when they drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and he will send them immediately.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of an ass”  The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the ass and the colt, and put their garments on them, and he sat thereon. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before them and that followed him shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” and he entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?” and the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee.”
  • 6) Reflection

- Why did Jesus enter Jerusalem on a donkey?

- What did the people do when they saw Jesus?

- What did the people who went ahead and who followed Jesus say?

  • 7) Enlightenment:

We’ve heard how Jesus entered into Jerusalem before he suffered the passion and died on the cross. Jesus received the acclamations from the people who days after would ask Pilato to crucify him. Palm Sunday, as it is called, is the beginning of Holy Week.

On Holy Thursday Jesus got together with his disciples to have his last supper . In this supper he instituted the Eucharist so that he would always be with us .

Crucify is to be placed on the cross, that’s how the slaves and criminals died. Jesus accepted all this to free us from the sin and death, because he loved all of us, until the last moment.

However, Jesus didn’t stay in the tomb; he resurrected and that was his final victory, and also, because in that way we can also resurrect, we won’t stay in a tomb , thanks to Jesus.

Those present, standing  in a circle and with a palm made from cardboard in their hands, will pray Our Father and will sing again the song .

- As an offering to Jesus I will put my cross in a place where I can see it (defeating temptations).

- During Easter I’ll go to the church, every time I can ,to take part in the celebrations of those days.

- Every night I’ll pray for those who have lost their faith in Jesus.
