"To know and to love  "

  • Especific objective:

That the children reflect on Advent as a time to know and love Jesus.

  • 1)  GREETING

The catequist should prepare before hand a card board in the form of a heart, with the name of Jesus written on it. (The catequist should not say anything, just wait for the children´s questions)

  • 2) Prayer

Sing the Our Father. Let us tell Jesus that we all love Him, we need his company at every moment and ask Him to keep us in his friendship.

Now we are going to remember and say how we have put into practice the committment that we made the week before: keep the axe in mind and pray every night to be better christians.

A word game. To know and to love.: The catequist takes 12 card boards all the same size, and write on each one a letter of the words TO KNOW and TO LOVE, then divide the children in two groups, send one group out of the room. Give the letters of TO KNOW to the group inside the room, let them hide the letters. Then, let the second group come inside the room, they should find the letters and make the right word. After this, repeat the process with TO LOVE. Put the two words in a visible place.

  • 5)    THE GOSPEL

Remember that the week before we saw the map of the land where Jesus lived, and the place where John baptized the people. We already know who John the Baptist is. Today we are going to find out something very important about John the Baptist and Jesus.

Let´s read Matthew 11, 2-11.

Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “ Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another? And Jesus aswered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is he who takes no offence at me.”

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? Why then did you go out? To see a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft raiment are in kings´ houses. Why then did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you , and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thee. Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the baptist; yet he who is least in the kindom of heaven is greater than he.

Contemplate the picture at the beginning of this page and remember the details of the reading on Matthew 11, 2-11

Do you all know why John the baptist was in prison? The catequist should have read before hand some of the following: Matthew 14, 1-2; Mark 6,14-19; Luke 3, 18-20. Did Jesus´ answer go beyond words? What did Jesus say to John ´s disciples? What did Jesus say about John the baptist?

Today we played a game about finding words: Which were these words?

(The children would answer TO KNOW and TO LOVE this is what John wanted his disciples to do. He was in prison, but he wanted them to discover the Saviour, the Mesiah, for them to know him, follow him and love him. John knew that he would not come out alive from prison, so he wanted to guide his disciples.

Jesus answered telling them what the prophets anounced in the old testament: Tell John that the lame.......the blind........the poor..... Jesus also praised John. We should not forget that Jesus invites us to be humble, charitable, generous and kind. Let us carry out our mission as John and Jesus did.

8)  ACTIVITY

Let us draw in our notebook a square and vertical lines so that it looks like a prison, let us write inside the names of those things that have us imprisoned:
-the friend that I like the least
-the person who did me wrong that I can´t forget
-my work or obligation that is hard for me to do.

-Write the name of Jesus on a card board.

-Pray for all the people who are in my drawing , and work on those thigns that I do not like to do.
