Theme:
Jesus invites us to follow Him.
Objetive : That children come to understand that Jesus calls each one of us in particular to follow Him and that each one of us should freely respond to His call.
Environment: Place on the notice board the words “Follow me” in large letters and small footsteps as if they were following a path.
1- Greeting
Jesus is someone who respects people a lot and that is why his friendship with each one of us is personal and adapted to our way of being. He truly respects us, he never forces us.
2- Revision of commitment.
Last week we made a commitment, let's see if Jesus will be happy with what we have done.
3- Prayer.
Dear Jesus: We always want to be friends of yours. We are still small to know what we have to do but you know what is good for us. May we never say no to those who need us to help them. Amen.
4- Activity.
Each child should draw in his exercise book what he likes to do the best. After they have finished, the catechist hands out a strip of paper in which the words “Follow me” are written. Each child should affix the strip on his drawing wherever he chooses.
5- Gospel
Before beginning the reading of the Word of God the catechist will make a comment, for example, the following: What we have done is very important, and has very much to do with the message that Jesus gives us today in the Gospel.
Matthew 9, 9-13.
As Jesus was walking on from there he saw a man named Matthew sitting by the customs house, and he said to him, 'Follow me'. And he got up and followed him. While he was at dinner in the house it happened that a number of tax collectors and sinners came to sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, 'Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?' When he heard this he replied, 'It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and learn the meaning of the words: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. And indeed I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners.'
6- Reflexion
-What was Matthew's job when Jesus called him?
-What did Jesus say to Matthew and how did he respond?
-What reply did Jesus give to the Pharisees who criticized Him?
7- Enlightenment
Jesus wants us all to go in his Kingdom of happiness, that is why, each of us is invited personally. When we respond to Jesus, we have to make a decision, that is: follow Jesus or follow what we like. Matthew enjoyed his job as a tax collector because he could obtain good profits and as he worked for the government, that is the Romans, who were "invaders" of that country, the pharisees had a very bad impression of him. Jesus is not interested in what type of job, or what type of person, He passes by and invites us to follow Him. Each person must decide whether to remain doing what he likes or follow Jesus. Matthew felt quite happy that Jesus was interested in him and that is why he went after Him, then he invited Jesus to a meal at his house with all his friends. Jesus who had entered into Matthew's heart went to eat with him. The jealous and criticizing pharisees thought ill of those who were not of their group and that is why the criticized Jesus for being with people who they did not approve of. Jesus replies that he has come to heal the the sick and the sinners, because sin is the worst sickness.
Let us think that each one of us do the things that we like but if Jesus invites us to work with him, we have to decide and give him a reply.
8- Celebration
Let us hold in our hands the drawing we have made and think for a moment in our reply to Jesus. The catechist suggests that each child should make a small prayer giving a reply to Jesus or asking for his help or giving thanks. (What's important is that the child has understood the message)
9- Commitment.
- We are missionary children and our reply to Jesus is to live what He tells us.
- - We will write the 6th commandment of the missionary child:
- "A missionary child is happy in the service of others".
- - Pray every night that many children and young people have replies to Jesus' call.
