6- Gospel John 18, 33-37.
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
34 "Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?"
35 "Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?"
36 Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."
37"You
are a king, then!" said Pilate.
Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for
this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to
the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
7- Reflection:
- Why did Pilate ask Jesus if He was king of the jews?
-What did Jesus answer? What is the mission of Jesus?
-Who are the ones that listen to what Jesus has to say?
8- Enlightenment
The jews carried Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor who had the power to condem a person to death. Pilate started speaking to Jesus asking Him if He was king. Jesus answered with a question; was Pilate saying that on his own accord or because others have spoken about Him. At that moment, Pilate has the truth in front of him but because power and fame are more important to him, he does not accept Jesus as king and lord. He washed his hands so as not to get involved in Jesus’ death but he allowed them to kill Jesus. Jesus told Pilate that He came to the world to give witness to the truth and that everyone who is of the truth listens to Him and believes in Him. Pilate found the truth and did not accept it. We have found Jesus and we know that He is the truth. Are we capable of being faithful to Jesus before power, fame, pleasure, material things? We will be able to be strong if God the Father, son and Holy Spirit is the only king of our hearts.
9- Celebration
Before hand the catechist should prepare a card for every child. On one side of the card the catechist should write the letters of the following expression: I BELIEVE IN YOU JESUS, OUR KING AND LORD. On the other side of the card the children should write a prayer of thanksgiving. When everyone has finished, the children should form the words of the expression, then they should read their prayer of thanksgiving. Finally the children can sing a song that has a message of Jesus as our king.
